Formerly known as Siam, Thailand is situated in the center of the Indo-China peninsula in south-east Asia.
It shares its coastlines with Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand and India and Indonesia in the Andaman Seas.
Thailand is an active participant in regional and international organizations and has close ties with other ASEAN countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, Myanmar, Vietnam and the Philippines, Foreign and economic ministers of these countries gather together to hold annual meetings.
Regional cooperation in economic, trade, banking, political and cultural matters, is the main agenda for these countries.
In the international Thailand has contributed to UN peacekeeping efforts in East Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq. The Indian Embassy is located in Bangkok.
